Mission Statement

To magnify the intimacy of the De Vries van Heijstplantsoen site. The site as an artificial natural environment succeeds due to the variety of uses and stimuli it provides. A survey conducted on students revealed their desire for a nature and open space in a park. Therefore, we feel it is appropriate to delicately intervene and respect the balance of these two conditions.

Connections

To critique our research and overall conceptual momentum, we contacted and opened a dialogue with two professionals in the fields of Psychology and Phenomenology. Patrick Healy of the Delft School of Design, and Dr. Dudley Weems, of the University of Georgia Student Health Center (USA) each shared their views on the progress of our project and the rigor of our research. read more

Specialization

Intimacy, as we define, is influenced by a western understanding of the term, dealing with the close relationship of one entity to another. From here we can begin to discuss the broad topic of intimacy in a focused way. Through the works of Bachelard, Schultz and Alexander, we have developed a certain knowledge about how the idea of intimacy is deeply rooted to our relationship with the natural environment.

Concept

Through conducting research that attempted to define intimacy in terms of its components, we became aware of the significance edge conditions. Our concept deals with how intimacy can be enhanced through the manipulation of thresholds or border conditions. read more

Research

Because of the myriad ways in which intimacy is manifested and understood around the world, the study of intimacy at a cultural level is not in the scope of this research. The methodology of our research consisted of creating a taxonomy of Psychological and Phenomenological criteria which form the basis of an understanding of how humans experience space. read more

Motivation

Our first impression of the site is that it has moments or glimpses of spaces where intimacy is encouraged. The genesis of our research was to pinpoint the exact qualities that contribute to the phenomenon of intimacy discovered on the site. This question then blossomed into a cataloging of intimate affordances that create this intimacy.

Client(s)

Originally conceived for students, our intervention will nevertheless be applicable to all visitors of the site. The clients will be the primary means of testing the success or failure of our experiments relating to the magnification of intimacy.
