In this project of MIT, two pixelated layers are placed on top of each other. Pistons within the structure of the blocks are able to move up and down. This controls the height of the blocks.

Archdaily sparc.jpg

This project follows the same theme of 'pixelation'. For the intervention of Atom07 in the park, there is a need to have both indoor and outdoor spaces. This led to the development of a new system, where the mechanism of the block units are placed inside of the box. See system page for more details.

Advantages

- Highly pixaelation which gives higher resolution of shape and form

- One actuator per piston

- Individual controlled

- No connections needed between units

Disadvantages

- Supported by a framework, needs both floor and ceiling space

- Always visible / present

- Fixed movement possibillity's, in relation to the frame

Previous research

For more research refer to Atom page.

In this new phase of the project the focus is on Stylos, Bouwpub and Kadmium as the main 'client'. Stylos, especially want's to be closely connected to the project and would like to see it realised.

For the technical aspect, experts on kinetic design, materials and mechanics and mechanical engineering has been assisting the design of the project.

Different actors are contacted to validate the design. In the initial contact, the validators were asked if they see a future for the project and if so, to give real life demands for the concept. One of the actors was so interested in the project, they approached us and asked to be closely involved in the design. The interviews is compiled in the: list of demands.

Joris van Dijk is the event planner of the student faculty group Stylos. Stylos see a lot of potential for the design, they are interested in frequent use. So frequent even that they would like to be the supervising party for the site. They will be the anchor tenant and will make use of the site between the different actors. Companies often approach Stylos asking if they need any sponsorship. Stylos will assist the project finding appropriate funds from companies for initial costs as well as assistance for obtaining materials.

Stylos's demands are mainly focused to provide space for students. A place where students can take a break from studying. Also the need for a space where students can easily connect to Stylos.

In the second meeting Joris van Dijk of Stylos is enthuasiastic with the progress of the project and would like to see more development of the idea.

Linda Ammerlaan

Kadmium logo.jpg
Is working at the Kadmium exhibition space in the inner city of Delft. The moment she heard about the concept, she started giving referrals to people who might be interested. Besides seeing a bright future for the project, she is a good contact within the creative industry. Linda works in a gallery and has good insight on the demands of different types of artist and simultaneously has a good view on the organising aspect of art galleries. She is a good user to connect with in the future to check if the design is able to meet up with the different demands.

In the second meeting we discussed the progress of the project, during this meeting she became more enthusiastic about the project as there has been considerable development of the design. She also pointed again on some subjects which need to be in the project.

Bouwpub logo.jpg
Is one of the organisational powers of the Bouwpub, next to this she is working at the Faculty of Architecture. The bouwpub currently has a nice space on the East side of Architecture Faculty, however for events the space isn't sufficient and the views around are not that interesting. For this the bouwpub is interested to have the option to rent a bigger space close to the faculty. The nice thing here is they are a local actor as well, so would like to see the development of the site. The bouwpub has some experience in organising events and the demands needed for social activities. They will be an expert and a user.

For the use of the site they would like some pre-set layouts of the project which they can choose from. This should be possible from a remote location. She mentioned the advantages of real time adaptation of the system to cater for different sized events and change size of the room as more people jointhe event. She mentioned the need for electricity and other infrastructures like plumbing and W.C's.

Logo top.gif

Is a board member and active participant of TOP (technical meeting point in Delft). Top was originally started to improve the connection between the technical aspects of the city, like univesity, students and starting technical bushinesses, and the inhabitants of Delft. Currently TOP is focused on exhibiting art, architecture and public friendly technical ideas. New technologies are not currently TOP's main priority. They have moved to exhibition art to make money and survive in this climate of declining funds. They still exhibit work of the university and have a good informal connection to different people and faculty. And one of their wishes is to have an exhibition space closer to the campus, so the inventors of the exhibited technique's can be more connected. They might be interested in organising some larger activity's which don't fit their current space.

In this interview it became apparent that artists are more than other users concerned with the effect of the weather and vandalism of their art. Artist are interested in exhibiting their works but only if they are sure their works of art is safe. Emial saw the potential but had some remarks on safety and durability. She also mentioned that most artist don't have a lot of money to show their art, so they will need to be insured that the exhibition is a success to avoid their art name to be tarnished.

Experts

Gerry Hobbelman, Is a structural professor at faculty of Architecture in Delft. Giving lectures on the behavior of forces in buildings. Project G had a nice sit down with him and he gave some interesting feedback which can be read here

Patrick Teuffel, is a professor at the faculty of architecture, TU Delft. He is known for his knowledge of movable and kinetic structures. After showing him our first option for the mechanics of the project he advised us to look in to other solutions as well. However in the end the first solutions seems to the most fitting.

Susanna Komossa, in her book "The Dutch urban block and the public domain Models, rules, ideals" She goes in to the relation of the public space and its user. In the future she is willing to discuss with us about the design.

Andre Taris, Andre is an Australian Industrial Designer. His work has a strong underpinning of user-object interaction. After the project takes more shape, a validated choice of material is possible.

YES Delft Is an organisation funded by the TU Delft and helps student to think about entrepreneurship and own businesses. Starting a new business will need some guidance.

Raxana Palfi is an expert on computer aided design with a broad spectrum of sofware she masters.

Gerardus Baardolf - BK, Specialist for the fabrication for metal parts of the design.

Ketting Import Maatschappij BV supported this project by providing gears and chains for the mechanical part of this project.

Other relations

Relation with other atoms

In the first phase of the design studio all of the atoms came up with their own concept for the site. After a few weeks a collaboration was initiated by the Tutors, this gave some new insights in to the different projects, but Atom 07 chose not to combine projects. Owing to the clarity of the designs, atoms could not relate to other projects as most groups were happy with their own designs. At the end of phase one, some resemblances could be found between atom 2 and 7.

From Atom 6, initially focussed on urban scale, which was very appealing to use as part of a joint urban proposal.

Atom 1 proposed to be the provider of information, space and trips for all the other atoms, after some short slightly visited workshops it did not seem to be a success and they turned away from this approach. They convinced people to work more together in the hyperbody studio, in this way projects can talk and discuss about the project and give/recieve feedback.

Relation with other projects

in the second phase the collaboration between atoms still didn't reach a new level of connections. The projects being more defined at phase II, make presenting to other projects easier. People are even less willing to leave their projects and and change for the last Phase as most groups feel that the projects are too developed to change. Project are now working in a shared space for most of the time thanks to atom1 but so far it did not resulted in collaboration.

Several projects are working on the adaptable space for different use(rs). Project_G has the best connection with Project_C Especially their way of connecting to the surrounding with moveable bridges and a lowered part for the cars is appealing to integrate with this project. These interventions of Project_c can be seen here

Relation to other developments on site

The road between the faculty of Architecture and the van Heyplantsoen will become less important. In the research of atom 6 we can see a interview and a map of the new situation. This is good news for this project, the main user Stylos will be even more connected to the site. If the road adjacent to the park is closed to become used as a public walk way, more students will have easier access to the park

In the future it a possibility for several interventions can take place in the park at the same time. If this would be the case some collaboration would be needed with other project to re-configure them in such a way they strengthen each other on site.
