1:10 Prototype Experiment

1 10 01.jpg 1 10 02.jpg

Before starting the 1:1 real size construction, we did a experiment first by making a 1:10 prototype. The picture on the left above shows the folded situation of the block chosen for prototype, and the one on the right is when it's flatten.

In this model we can already see some of the feathers of the BEAST such as folding and stretching. We reduced the hight and width of the block from original design to a certain values, which still keep possibilities for people to seat on it, to ensure the prototype could be realize within a short period and a limited labour force.

As a conclusion of the 1:10 prototype, the most intractable issues mainly take place on 3 parts: the stretching slider, the actuator and the materials.

The sliders which are now on the top of the model can be stuck when the actuator pulls the structure up. We tried to find solutions such as attaching real sliders - which were frequently used for doors and drawers - into the wood plates, yet this idea was abandoned since the steel sliders we intended to use were adding a large amount of weight to the structure, and it also would take a long time to order and deliver.

At the meantime, a proper kind of material is critical to hold the entire weight of the upper part of the model and to give a strength to itself to avoid bending. In addition, the size of the real actuator we get for 1:1 model is quite different from the one on 1:10, design of the block needs to be modified to adapt to its length.

As an alternative of steel sliders, we decided to make sliders ourselves.

We create a track on three of the yellow pieces and attach a series of wheels on the other two blue pieces on their overlapping parts. The position of the wheels are fixed to the two blue pieces, they will roll along the tracks when the actuator starts to pull or push the blue pieces.

Feathers of this solution are that we reduced the weight of the sliding part of the structure instead of adding more and more elements on them, and it almost solved the friction problem which made the sliding part stuck in the previous 1:10 model.

Material Research

Hexacomb Board : 40mm of thickness

Hexacomb board is introduced to the main structure of the 1:1 prototype. It is quite strong and significantly lighter comparing with the MDF wood. However the suppliers suggested that it was not strong enough to hold the whole structure and to react to the force of the actuator, thus we decided to use this material for filling and cover it with triplex wood on two sides to gain more strength.

Plastic Yellow Tubes & Connect Element: 20mm of diameter

The plastic yellow tubes are used to connect the parallel pieces and keep them in position. Another tube with a comparatively larger radius is attached to the yellow tube to keep a certain distance between each two pieces of triplex wood with hexacomb, it also gives an end to the connection.

Steel Bars & Wheels: 4mm of diameter for steel bars and 35mm for wheels

Wheels on the sliders is fixed by steel bars.

Actuator: The length of the actuator is ranging from 522.5mm to 822.5mm.

Since there would be a large force between the actuator and the upper blue piece of triplex, in order to strengthen the joint part of them we introduced two pieces of steel plates on each side of the actuator in which way we not only extended the length of it but also applied stronger bars to connect the actuator and the blue piece of triplex.

2 Spaces & 3 Seats

09product00.jpg

As one small piece from the block of the BEAST, the 1:1 prototype model has already been powered with two specific feathers: folding and stretching.

The aim and the assignment of the BEAST is to generate flexible space on the site, and the model could indicate its abilities and possibilities since it could provides 2 options of space and 3 options of seating places.
