Dynamic structure

A structure capable of changing volume, form, colour, openings like an octopus or a chameleon, not to adjust to the surroundings, but to adjust to the user of the space. This structure can change shape by manually moving or pushing the volume to the users liking or by sensing the user through optical-, pressure- or sound-sensors.

Unlike a Static structure, which has a limited number of possible shapes defined (according to how u place it or turn it), a dynamic structure can be formed into an ‘unlimited’ number of shapes according to the wishes of the user. There is of course a limitation to the maximum flexibility of such a structure, however we can try to achieve the highest amount possible to the user’s needs.


Some examples of dynamic structures:


Interactive wall, Hyperbody, 2009

An interactive and movable wall, as the participant moves closer, the walls will react.

This can be used to create an entrance for our structure, a chair or table coming out of the wall or floor for the user to work on or a patio within the structure.


BMW GINA 2010 Concept Car

In this concept car a dynamic steel frame span with strong fabric is used to ‘clad’ the car. Because of this system doors can fold open without any seems. Also the headlamps and the engine are revealed by moving the structure from within.

In our project fabric with a jointed frame inside can be used to create dynamic surfaces which can change shape.


Calatrava Milwaukee Art Museum

Calatrava is an interesting architect to study for these kinds of structures, for he has a doctoral on the folding of space frames. For a dynamic structure with or without cladding, freedom of movement within is vital.


Automatic Door, Japan

This door from an old Japanese tech-fair clip shows us a way to open the door with optical sensors. By standing in front of the door only the minimum amount of bars will open to let you through. These bars will slide in so far that they make the shape of your body.


Barbapappa

Barbapappa is a blob that can change into any form possible. He always saves the day (like in the picture capturing a leopard) and makes everyone happy.

In a perfect world our dynamic structure could be like Barbapappa, change its shape to the ones in ‘need’, in our case a public space for the function required.
