"SPACEBOOK or HOW CAN A SITE SUSTAIN ACTIVITY 24/7 ?"

THE SITE

Problems:
  • The site is devoid of human activity
  • There is no landscaping or landscaping attributes (e.g. lamps, benches)
  • The lush green border around the site works like a fence during summer, it blocks the view and inhibits human presence
  • The site is a vacuum in an area full of program.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

"Ticking away, the moments that make up the dull day"

"...On successful city streets, people must appear at different times...or else parks will be used only sporadically...and this simplification of use - meaning fewer users, with fewer different purposes and destinations at hand - feeds upon itself...a kind of unbuilding, or running-down process is set in motion...the infusion would obviously have to result in the presence of maximum numbers of persons at the times when the district needs them most for time balance..."

This is a collage from Jacobs' book. The book promotes an almost volatile, effervescent city life of streets lined with mixed-uses that create activity at different times in the day which leads to a constant presence of users / inhabitants. All this makes for a diverse and vital city life where even though we are strangers we step out of our individuality and participate in the public life.

We wish to build upon this.

A website works 24/7 and is continuously evolving; e.g. a wiki page where the user is free to add content and to make it public worldwide. By taking the concept of hyperspace we propose a site which will permit a widespread and ever-changing spectrum of activities throughout the whole of the day. The site will be linked with an online website for booking activities, thus it will be continuously changing and allow the interweaving of human interaction (a lecture hall, next to a performance space next to individual study-rooms, etc). This functionality will create a trace of human activity; a new user will have the option of seeing the previous activity and form. Just as time leaves a trace into a building’s physicality and identity,so will continuous activity leave a trace on the site.

STEP 01: ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE

Questionnaire snapshot

We have created an online questionnaire. Its goal is to tell us what users want and when they want to do it.

Having this information will help us to create an estimate on the spread of activities throughout the day.

STEP 02: SYSTEM SCHEMATICS

The idea of 'Spacebook':

Spacebook is a part of Facebook to address as many people as possible, without trying to create another social network platform.

SPONSORS

The sponsor can be a joint partnership between TU Delft, the municipality of Delft and a third investor - contractor.

HOW TO FINANCE THE PROJECT?

The financial aspect of the design can be splitted into two periods:

1) Building costs,

2) Maintenance costs.

For the first period we envision two major parties financing the building costs. One of them will be TU Delft, the other party is the municipality of Delft. The interests of TU Delft are mainly focused on science, technology and innovation. Their ‘sponsorship’ can be done both with cash (paying for construction and materials) or investing in services (like providing knowledge and skills).

For the municipality of Delft the development of the site is very interesting, because it will be an improvement on the existing public space in Delft. It is the role of the municipality to stimulate new actions in public space, especially when the target group is so big. Since the project will be known as a very innovative and modern way of using the urban space it might stimulate Delfts economic system. This is also in the interest of the municipality, meaning there might be some extra money available for development.

Besides these two major parties we envision several other (smaller) parties that would like to sponsor the building process, in order to link their companies name to this innovative project.

The maintenance costs will mainly be paid for by users of the site, project and website. We see possibilities for Spacebook memberships: giving members privileges, priority booking and unique possibilities when they pay money. We do not envision a paid membership for all members, since using the site should be available for all.

Since a lot of activities will take on the Spacebook website we offer companies (big and small) to place advertisement on the website. Spacebook will be more than just a booking system, it will incorporate several popular social media as well, all to stimulate the (inter)activity between users. This part of the project will be very interesting for companies. Besides placing advertisement, it might become possible for companies to exclusively book the site. This, of course, is only possible in special occasions, since the main goal for this project is to have as many people (inter)active as possible!

SUSTAINABILITY

We suspect the traffic to be an untapped source for energy.
