a few words about the site:

The De Vries van Heystplantsoen site has a strong natural character. Unlike its surroundings, it is not artificial and is a rare and powerful urban typology in Delft. It is an isolated site and its introversion is stressed by the plantation barrier on the periphery. Although there are a variety of entrances, they do not seem to be well defined, therefore access is limited and seems to only be used by locals as a transitional space.Once inside, the site seems to be connected with its surroundings by traffic noise, and although experientially the isolation quality is enjoyed by a few, it is lacking a programmatic definition to keep the (new) visitor interested and involved.

Process

Based on our opinions and experiences with locals and their views on the site, we analyzed by means of diagrams the existing conditions and study what if scenarios, and their reaction on the inmediate surroundings. We weighted the positive and negative reprecutions of these scenarios but keeping the preservation of the introverted and distinctive character of the site.

Conclusion of the analysis.

The site has a very distinctive and strong character. According to our own thoughts of the site and the results of the interviews. Its a place of serenity but sometimes this serenity is disturbed by the noise. And is a pity that a lot of people until now didn't discover the place.

Main goal

Our goal is to preserve the introversion of the area, but at the same time we want people to engage with the site. We want to go back to the original character of the area The area being a common ground to students and staff. But we also want to involve the current users of the park. This site is meant as a space for people with different demands. Our intervention for the site would be a programmatic negotiation between a social gathering structure and the inherited qualities of the site.

Next step

Our project will start with the investigation of underground systems that uses sound as a design element, and as a guide for programmatic distribution and improvement of current conditions.

Identity

Identity of "De Vries van Heystplantsoen" in past

The park acted like a common ground, all the university building were situated around this park. This park was mainly used by students and staff (they had their lunch in the park for instance). (identity park in the past)

Identity of "De Vries van Heystplantsoen" today

The park is an independent area. The functions which are surrounding the park are not really related to the park but are remarkably related to each other. (indentity park today)

Design proposal

The Dynamic wall is something which is able to preserve the features of the park and will even strengthen it. The Dynamic wall:
