Our design consists of a few major topics. These topics form the base of the research and will determine the function and shape of our design.

Based on the Collaborative Design research we decided to make a physical design platform, to be projected anywhere where such a design space is needed. The scale of this design platform can be anywhere between a piece of furniture to a complete pavilion. In order to make collaboration work, not only with the present students and teachers, but also with the future ones, an Open Source design process is needed. Also a Smart Construction method should be used in order for future students and teachers to quickly build, rearrange or replace parts of the platform.

Design

Platform

The Platform is the base of the design. It has a defined shape and can be placed on different places and different configurations on the preferred design location. the platform is stacked in a zigzag way, alternately attaching the front and the back with each other, in order to form a stable and strong structural entity. The platform can also be used in different configurations like a wall, a floor or a column.

On top of this entity Extensions can be placed. These extensions will be designed according to the input extracted from the environment. We will provide the first version of the design, for future versions of the platform the extensions will be designed by the future users, students or teachers, according to the new environment.

The platform will contain multiple incisions for different possible extensions which can create different spacial configurations.

Extensions

There are all kinds of Extensions possible. We divided them in the following categories: seatings; elevations; tables; closets; legs etc. These are extensions we came up with for the first tier of the design. In the future new users can design new extensions for the platform. The picture shows the tree of extensions, where the platform mentioned above has possible extensions which can be attached to it, but on itself is a possible extension to a bigger whole (building scale).


Story Board

Users can change or rearrange parts of the design when the need for change is occurring. In the pictures shown to the right, some user scenarios are illustrated.

Scale

The design can act on different scales following the environmental requirements. Say we want the design to work in protoSPACE itself, it can be used as an indoor piece of furniture, enhancing the indoor designing qualities. If there is need for an outside pavilion, or an extension of protoSPACE, it can be build outside as an small building. The parts used on both occasions are the same, only the way they are assembled will be different. Also some extensions mentioned above may be redesigned in order to better fit the new environment.

When our design is build as an outside pavilion or as an indoor structure outside of protoSPACE, it will extent protoSPACE. We will provide design space qualities in a new location. Next to this feature we will try to connect this old and new design space, in order to share knowledge easily between the two (or more).
