Smart Construction

The smart construction is a system we designed to enhance user adaptability within the system. The construction allows the user to quickly change or rearrange parts of the design. Also the way we designed it allows users to quickly remake or redesign and fabricate a part of the design, using just the tools available at protoFAB.


Shape

The shape of the system derived from different sources. Next to the aesthetical argument one of these sources is the way the system's connections work shown below, these notches provide different configurations possible at different positions in the design (T-holes).

Next to these notches we made a more complicated edge and holes structure, in order to give users an incentive to try out new possibilities within the existing system, but also to give a starting point for future extension designs.

Another source of the specific shape is within the Open Source story of our design, namely the protoTAG system. The tag fits within the 18 by 18 mm grid and the edge surface is an extension of the way the tag is build up.

Connections


The connections all consists within a 18 by 18 mm grid. Together with the thickness of the material, also 18 mm, all parts should fit on top of or slide into each other, giving a lot of freedom creating and combining parts together.
