APPROACH


The site needs special character that overweighs its secondary logistical context


According to the strategic city plans in Delft, there is a need to strengthen the link between the old town and the TU Campus. This is the crucial task for the site. But the site is not situated on the logistical artery, the creation of the link with wide public use has to overcome the problem of secondary location.


There is a need for the site to become more than its location per se promises. The site itself has to start working as a disrupter of the flows. The site has to become an attractor.


The attractor of the site is its public character, the identity will be constant no matter what program the site will host. Allowing dynamically changing functions, the site becomes independent from the market forces. At the same time the character attracts people to the functions.


The character we give to the place will work as urban phenomena. The character of the place has to differ so much that it starts to work as an event beyond its architectural qualities. This can be achieved through time repetition concept, an interactive phenomena that can be seen as an ultimate event. The time repetition, the memory tool, makes the space personalized, but at the same time achieves the difference in kind, a forth dimension is now added to the space. The delight factor in this case is an atmospherical one.


This atmospherical concept is a precondition for the possible program. It will be divided into themes according to the wished program. The atmospheres will make the solution succeed.


SPECIALIZATION


We are dealing with extremely changeable program. We can create the constant indentity even when the program cannot be relied on. It makes the possibilities of development extremely flexible. The is our cure for the changing and unstable world.


PRODUCT

We are providing tools for giving character to public space. We are making of preconditions to specific programmes. These tools will overcome the difficulties of the site.

THE SITE

There is a need for the site to become more than its location per se promises.

CHALLENGE

Our design challenge is to create a site with evolving identity which serves the spatial affordance of certain activities in dynamically changing programmatic context. We are seeking for amplification of public activities to promote the private functions.

SPECIALIZATION

Site conditioning through spatial affordance, identity strategy and memory machine. The site has to be conditioned to have a set of qualities that allow desired activities. The evolving identity of the site provides preconditions for the needed program. Our challenge is to manipulate the with the memory of the users to amplify activities.

SUB-SPECIALIZATION

The interaction will happen in the border between the public and the private. The aim is to find the mutual penetration of public and private life. The multilayered system deals with the spatial parameters and the tactical reaction to subordinate the environment under a clear identity.

SPATIAL AFFORDANCE

To construct the ideal space for different groups of functions. The method is achieved through generalization of the wishes from our clients. The spatial affordance covers general parameters studied from typologies. The affordance in the border conditions of public and private will be dealing with the measure of the void in terms of the porosity, transparency and permeability (reference to Universität für die Angewandte Kunst Wien - Postgraduate program - Urban strategies - PoroCity lab - www.urbanstrategies.at/10%20POROCITY/01%20NFO/10%20LNK_01.swf), but also with the spatial demands of the display function of the memory machine.

THE MEMORY MACHINE

The memory machine is a tactical tool to improve the local identity. This simple device can replay spatial situations to create the needed mood(abstract repetition) or to establish an interactive relationship with the users (personal repetition). The machine has recording and replaying devices (sound, visuals) to point out the virtual representation of wanted situation. The images can be also processed with certain filters to improve the identity of the client. The pictures can be repainted according to specific mood of event or missing mood of the moment. The filters are dealing with the colouring, contrasting, shuffling, sharpening, blurring and proportioning the reality towards emotion. The machine is collecting, processing and displaying data. THE IDENTITY

The character of the place has to differ so much that public space starts to work as an event. Through that we can interrupt the flows and reach the level of critical mass to become the meaningful link between the city and the campus. The identity of an amusing event can be achieved through time repetition concept. The repetition of time, the memory machine, makes the space personalized, but at the same time achieves the difference in kind, a forth dimension is now added to the space. We are hoping that this solution will create a local urban phenomena, a place with the well known atmospherical delight factor in Delft. The recognition of the memory machine in its best personal repetition mode can be as powerful an ultimate event.
