project I:Interview with Phd Felix Yuan
On 29th of Novembre we had an interview with Phd Felix Yuan, doing researches in Transport and Planning Department.
We took an interview to Felix on the topic about the traffic issue involved in our concept.
Generally saying, it’s a creative idea and quite realizable.
By setting up a shared space, we make the site and the surroundings into a special zone, which gives people alarms in advance rather than making people confused when they’ve already entered the so-called moving traffic road.
In addition, the accessibility of the site is indeed improved by the moving flexible directions of the traffic road.
However, the shared space slows down the speed of the entire traffic flow system, which will definitely influence the efficiency of the transport system. And the accessibility to the traffic is on the other hand blocked somehow.
The design concept is actually basing on the knowledge of Intelligent Traffic System (ITS). It’s creating a smart transportation system on the site and interactive to the surrounding users.
From a psychology point of view, the disadvantage is that it will only benefit the local people who are passing the area frequently from which they could get familiar with the system, but it is confusing people when they first come.
A variable message signs system needs to be specifically designed for this traffic zone as well. It has to be sophisticated enough for guiding people correctly and efficiently.
