References: In order for us to design the tools we need, we need examples showing us how it is done before and what tools actually work or have the desired effects. In the four categories chosen we describe a number of references. These can either be website, literature or professor/company contacts.

Activities

Mimoa is a relatively small community which is used to upload basic information about modern architecture all over the world. Their database is expanded daily and can be used in a number of ways. For example, people can create a guide with architecture they would like to see. These guides are also available to others, so more people can benefit from it. This is one of the many ways an online community can work together to organize activities which are of use to others as well.

Information

' Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. '

This is exactly what we are trying to achieve, however with a totally different scope. We specialize on our small community within the Faculty of Architecture; the MSc1 Hyperbody atoms 'world' including their links to teachers, actors and other necessary sources.

Patchube ("patch-bay") connects people to devices, applications, and the Internet of Things. As a web-based service built to manage the world's real-time data, Pachube gives people the power to share, collaborate, and make use of information generated from the world around them.

During a workshop about Pachube attended by us, Usman Haque showed us the possibilities of using existing information as input and using a network of sensors as input for a system that operates by using Pachube.com's online tools. The basic hardware for user created sensors are for example the Nanode and Arduino. They are pretty cheap and since the Nanode even has an ethernet port, this €25,- piece of hardware can be a very interesting tool to use for other atoms in putting their concepts of ambient influences to their structures into practice.

For more information about this workshop, please take a look at the notes we made or listen to the audio we recorded.

Interaction

By matching students, teachers, experts, atoms and others, these actors can help each other reach their design goals most effectively. Like a dating site, this platform tries to connect the different users in order to make a better understanding and ulimately better designs. A direct goal is to make visable what is out there to 'date'. What are the other atoms like and what are their strengths and weaknesses? With this knowledge we try making groups from different atoms easier and more flexible. Maybe one atom like to work partitially with another atom but not being completely occupied with chatting, We directly give give insight into every atoms wishes

Ants and bees work together to ensure the survival of their species. They act as a superorganism, with the help of very smart interactive communication systems this organism can operate without hierarchy, it's like different cells in your body work together to form you as a person. This kind of organism is able to defend themselves against big animals like bears but also build big cities containing millions of individuals. Our project should behave the same way, interacting with each other to be better then the sum of its parts, building (projects) and defending against attackers (critics).

BBC Documentary about ants and their way to act as a superorganism.

Rewards

We reward those who contribute the most; the more you help others, the more you'll get back from it. This is actually exactly what torrents are all about. Most people see torrents as illegal, however file exchange itself helps the community to be much richer by being able to share all the information available.

VideoSift is an online video sharing community. Users are in charge of what videos get the most attention. The CMS used by Videosift is so advanced, that people are given more privileges when helping others. For example by repairing region blocked or dead video links, they can automatically earn 'powerpoints' which they can use to publish videos they like most to the frontpage.

This way of thinking ensures the most active users have the most influence on what information gets the most attention. An added incentive to become a more active part of the community is an overall scoreboard of who has earned the most votes on all uploaded videos and comments. We strive to create a similar system with relevant information for the MSc1 Hyperbody design students.

The creator of Varo CMS, Rommel Santor, replied to our request to use 'Varo CMS' to begin our HyperPublic community as follows: "I'd love to help, but the problem with my software is it wasn't built to be distributed, it requires extensive customization to function as desired, and it is very old, clunky software I wouldn't feel good about putting out into the world. A good open source alternative would be Pligg, which is the software VideoSift was originally created with. It was designed as an open source Digg clone and might be just what you need."

After looking into Pligg, we feel it is a good alternative to Varo CMS because of the integrated voting capabilities, which we can adjust to fit the specific needs of our community.
