Mission Statement

To magnify the intimacy of the De Vries van Heytsplantsoen site. The site as an artificial natural environment succeeds due to the variety of uses and stimuli it provides. A survey conducted on students revealed their desire for a nature and open space in a park. Therefore, we feel it is appropriate to delicately intervene and respect the balance of these two conditions.

Specialization

Our field of specialization deals with how intimacy can be enhanced through the manipulation of thresholds or border conditions. Because of the myriad ways in which intimacy is manifested and understood around the world, the study of intimacy at a cultural level is not in the scope of this research. Intimacy, as we define, is influenced by a western understanding of the term, dealing with the close relationship of one entity to another. From here we can begin to discuss the broad topic of intimacy with in a focused way.

These affordances - or qualities - of intimacy that contribute to the phenomenon were documented and organized to give an idea of how many different "actors" work together to produce a certain experience. The desired outcome of this research is to "tag" all affordances of intimacy and parametize them in a manner that facilitates the testing and experimentation of our hypotheses.

Client(s)

Originally conceived for students, our intervention will nevertheless be applicable to all visitors of the site.

Due to the universality of intimacy and its relation to the human condition, all humans are potential beneficiaries of our research. Specific to the context, however, beneficiaries are students and residents of Delft.

Research

The methodology of our research consisted of creating a taxonomy of psychological and phenomenological conditions which form the basis of an understanding of how humans experience space.

Connections

To critique our research and overall conceptual momentum, we contacted and began a dialogue with two professionals in the fields of Psychology and Phenomenology.

Motivation

Our first impression of the site is that it has moments or glimpses of spaces where intimacy is encouraged. The genesis of our research was to pinpoint the exact qualities that contribute to the phenomenon of intimacy discovered on the site. This question then blossomed into a cataloging of intimateaffordances that create this intimacy.
