The park seems to be a quiet and nicely abandoned place. This gives it a special atmosphere

when you get into it; it belongs to you at this moment yet at the same time, one intuitively

feels that you cannot see everything in the first moment.

This abandonment makes the park hidden, which might make the guests curious. The park has so

much inaccessible space, which would be nice to discover. And in this way to discover things

in the nature relates to the botanic garden just next to the park. However here the way of

discovering goes not into this academic way of a botanic garden, then much more into exploring

the park. This may happen in different levels, or layers.

Intimacy, maintained and magnified year-round

The site as an artificial natural environment succeeds due to the variety of uses and stimuli it provides. A survey conducted on students revealed their desire for a nature and open space in a park. Therefore, we feel it is appropriate to delicately intervene and respect the balance of these two conditions.

Motivation

Our first impression of the site is that it has moments or glimpses of spaces where intimacy is encouraged.

The genesis of our research was to pinpoint the exact qualities that contribute to the phenomenon of intimacy discovered on the site. This question then blossomed into a cataloging of intimate affordances that create this intimacy.

Specialization

Intimacy, as we define, is influenced by a western understanding of the term, dealing with the close relationship of one entity to another. From here we can begin to discuss the broad topic of intimacy in a focused way. Through the works of Bachelard, Norberg-Schulz and Alexander, we have developed a certain knowledge about how the idea of intimacy is deeply rooted to our relationship with the natural environment.

Research

Because of the myriad ways in which intimacy is manifested and understood around the world, the study of intimacy at a cultural level is not in the scope of this research. The methodology of our research consisted of creating a taxonomy of Psychological and Phenomenological criteria which form the basis of an understanding of how humans experience space.

Concept

Magnifying the intimate atmosphere in the De Vries van Heijstplansoen through manipulation of existing natural boundary conditions. We liken intimacy to closeness or nearness, both of which are influenced by physical and non-tangible boundaries.

Connections

To critique our research and overall conceptual momentum, we contacted and opened a dialogue with two professionals in the fields of Psychology and Phenomenology. Patrick Healy of the Delft School of Design, and Dr. Dudley Weems, of the University of Georgia Student Health Center (USA) each shared their views on the progress of our project and the rigor of our research.

Client(s)

Originally conceived for students, our intervention will nevertheless be applicable to all visitors of the site. The clients will be the primary means of testing the success or failure of our experiments relating to the magnification of intimacy.

Project K

Project K will have everything to do with fire. Together with atom 10 we are making plans of creating a fire on site. This study will help us to explore what the effect of fire is on the idea of intimacy and disruption fire creates on the site.

Project L

Testing our hypothesis about the natural fear of being attacked by creating an intimate setting for users regardless of them being alone or accompanied. Studying peoples response. read more
